Allergies : Adapt Early, Avoid Suffering

Today, “ Allergies ” are a growing health concern affecting people of all ages — from infants and teenagers to working adults and the elderly. This condition isn’t limited to individuals with existing health vulnerabilities but can affect anyone. Allergy symptoms often begin mildly, such as nasal congestion, runny nose, sneezing, chronic cough, or itchy skin. While many dismiss these as minor inconveniences, the reality is that without proper diagnosis and care, such symptoms can escalate into chronic conditions that significantly impair quality of life, including asthma, chronic sinusitis, or even life-threatening allergic reactions.

What’s concerning is that many sufferers don’t realize that their daily discomforts are allergy-related. As a result, they choose to “tolerate” the symptoms rather than seek out causes or preventive measures. That’s why understanding allergies and learning to adapt early is essential. Though not contagious, allergies can be managed and their severity reduced through proper care.

What Are Allergies?

Allergies are an abnormal immune system response to allergens — substances that trigger allergic reactions. These include dust mites, airborne mold spores, pollen, and other irritants. When exposed, the body releases histamines, leading to itching, coughing, phlegm, breathing difficulty, nasal congestion, or hives. Allergies generally stem from two major causes: genetics and environmental factors.

Types of Allergens

Allergens are divided into two categories:

  1. Airborne allergens – such as dust mites, cockroaches, pet dander (from dogs and cats), grass pollen, or mold.
  2. Food allergens – such as cow’s milk, soy milk, eggs, seafood, or wheat.

Dust mites are the most common household allergen, thriving especially in bedding, pillowcases, blankets, and carpets under warm and humid conditions.

How Serious Are Allergies in Thailand?

According to the Allergy and Immunology Society of Thailand, up to 38% of Thai children and 20% of adults suffer from allergies. Over the past decade, allergy cases have increased 3–4 times. The main contributors include genetics, lifestyle changes from rural to urban living, sedentary habits, poor diets (e.g., increased fast food), less breastfeeding, rising pollution from traffic, industry, and smoking. Furthermore, keeping pets indoors, carpeted homes, and air-conditioned spaces with poor ventilation provide ideal environments for allergens like dust mites.

How to Prevent Allergies

  • Avoid triggers such as dust, car exhaust, cigarette smoke, incense, strong fragrances, and chemical exposure.
  • Keep your home clean, especially the bedroom. Change bed sheets and pillowcases at least once a week.
  • Exercise regularly — at least 30 minutes per session, 2–3 times per week — to boost your immune system.
  • Eat nutritious foods. A diet rich in proteins, vegetables, and fruits supports immunity. “You are what you eat.”
  • Get enough sleep to allow your immune system to repair, reset, and maintain balance.
  • Consult an allergy specialist for proper diagnosis, medication, and adherence to medical advice.

Although allergies are not life-threatening, neglecting proper care may lead to chronic health problems that impact your daily well-being more than you realize.
